gatsbysaurus asked: Hi, I know someone who does not have any Native American ancestry, yet they identify as two spirit. I was wondering if this was culturally appropriate for that person to do.
There’s no such thing as a non-Native “Two Spirit”, because Two-Spirit isn’t just a reference to your sexuality and gender identity, it’s a specific cultural, ceremonial, and spiritual role that was fulfilled by people who were Two-Spirit (or the equivalent term in their language/culture). So, self-identifying as a two-spirit when you’re not Native isn’t just inappropriate, it’s downright nonsensical.
